What We Believe As Christians

St. Alban's is an evangelical Anglican church. We seek to be a biblically faithful and orthodox church within the evangelical stream of the Anglican Way of following Jesus. This is the stream of Thomas Cranmer, Nicholas Ridley and Hugh Latimer; of William Wilberforce, Charles Simeon and J. C. Ryle; of John Stott, Michael Green and J. I. Packer; of Peter Akinola, John Chew and Gregory Venables.

We affirm the supremacy of the complete Canon of Holy Scripture, and we affirm the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) as our standard of doctrine and worship, including the Ordinal (with its preface), the 39 Articles of Religion, and the Solemn Declaration of 1893. We affirm the three ancient Western Creeds, (Apostles', Nicene and Athanasian) as well as the Chalcedonian formula.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Who is Jesus?
Answer: We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, And his kingdom will have no end. (From the Nicene Creed)

Question: How are we made right with God?
Answer: We are accounted righteous before God, only for the merit of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ by Faith, and not for our own works or deservings. (From Article XI, Page 702 BCP)

Question: Are there other saviours?
Answer: Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6) For Holy Scripture does set unto us only the Name of Jesus whereby human beings must be saved. (From Article XVIII, page 706 BCP)

Question: What is the Bible?
Answer: God's Word written. (From Article XX, page 706 BCP) Holy Scripture contains all things necessary to salvation: so that whatsoever is not read therein, nor may be proved thereby, is not to be required of any person, that it should be believed as an article of Faith, or to be thought requisite or necessary to salvation. (From Article VI, page 700 BCP)
