“You are a fairly biblical guy, how did you  let unbiblical stuff get into your mission statement?”

I was having a good and frank talk with someone about St. Alban’s mission and vision statement.  I was surprised by the comment, so I asked the  person if they could be more specific.  They focused on the word ‘confident’.  They confidently had problems with the word!  (I thought this but did not say it.)  So I told them a story.

I went back to school to get the degree I needed to be ordained.  I was 26 when I went back to school, and Louise and I had one child with another on the way.  I went back to school at a ‘low time’ for government grants.  In fact, no grants were available, only loans.  I worked part time as well as studied full time.  Louise took in kids.  I worked in the summer.  We still graduated with a heavy student loan debt and I was ordained into a Diocese  which, at the time, had quite low starting salaries.  To top matters off, when I graduated the government did not have any debt relief for low income individuals or families.  The full payments began six months after I graduated —  and the payments were very hard.  We were poor for a long time.

I used to be a pretty negative person.  I should rephrase this. I could be negative, and it wasn’t pretty. To encourage the person to take a certain course of action, I will say something like, “If I could go back and do this again, I would do this.” Today I am going to offer some un-asked for advice that takes the form of confession.

Money.

Some Christians believe that churches should not have an offering during the church service. If you are a guest and are a bit confused by the word ’offering’, I am referring to the practice of passing the offering plate during the worship service so that people can put in their tithes and offerings [money]. I am not going to say anything for or against the practice of other churches, but why do we do it? How should we understand the practice at St. Alban’s?
